They've been charged with conspiracy, smuggling, making false statements, and visa fraud.

The fungus they smuggled in causes head blight. That's a disease that affects wheat, barley, milo, and rice, and causes billions of dollars in economic losses in crops all over the world.
Products from the diseased grain ingested by humans or livestock, will cause vomiting, liver damage, reproductive problems, and birth defects.
One of the arrested is a professed loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party.
