HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting its annual Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony in front of the Law Enforcement Center with the Hutchinson Police Department.

The ceremony will be held Friday, May 13, at 11 a.m. Peace Officers Memorial Day was started in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

This year, the guest speaker will be Retired Lt. Col. Alan Stoecklein from the Kansas Highway Patrol. In addition to his distinguished career with the Kansas Highway Patrol, Lt. Col. Stoecklein also served as the interim Chief of Police for the Hutchinson Police Department before Chief Jeff Hooper was sworn in.

The ceremony will include opening and closing statements given by Sheriff Darrian Campbell and Chief Jeff Hooper, and a posting of the colors by Honor Guard members from both the Reno County Sheriff’s Office and the Hutchinson Police Department. Fallen officers from all Reno County agencies will be recognized during the ceremony and a member from the Reno County Sheriff’s Honor Guard will also play “Taps” in recognition of their sacrifice.
