NEWTON, Kan. — According to the City of Newton's latest update, they have had a number of recent sewer backups throughout town.

Many products, such as wipes, claim to be flushable; however, that doesn’t mean they are treatable in a city wastewater system. The fact is, some things should never be flushed down the toilet.

When they’re flushed, these items can clump together to block sewers. When blocked, sewers can flood homes and yards, causing misery for families and expensive repairs for City crews. It’s a problem for cities throughout the country.

The only items that should be flushed down the toilet are bodily fluids, fecal matter and toilet paper. Everything else goes in the trash can, even wipes that claim to be flushable.
