SALINE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted Kansas felon on new charges after a foot chase along the old river bed in central Salina.

On Monday evening, police were sent to the 600 block of South Front Street after report of that a suspect with four outstanding identified as 20-year-old  Xavier Murrell was in the area, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.  The suspect was also said to be in possession of a handgun.

An officer made contact with Murrell at 614 South Front Street. Murrell fled on foot southbound and jumped a fence at 633 South Front Street.

The officer yelled for Murrell to stop, but he continued to flee and ran down to the old Smoky Hill River bed area behind the YMCA and then continued eastbound.

A Salina police K-9 tracked Murrell along the creek and officers eventually located him hiding in a trash can at 905 East Prescott Road, according to Forrester. Murrell had a holster but police did not locate a handgun.

In addition to the four warrants, police arrested Murrell on the requested charge of felony interference with law enforcement.
