Calvin M. Sheppard, 98, died November 28, 2023, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson.  He was born July 3, 1925, to Roy and Fanny Masters Sheppard, at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, Kansas, where he had been a life-long Reno County, Hutchinson, Kansas resident.  

Calvin grew up on a dairy farm on 56th Street, now known as Sheppard’s Acres.   He attended Prosperity Grade School, Hutchinson High School, and Hutchinson Community College.  

Calvin served in the United States Army in WWII and the Korean War.  He was part of the 82nd Airborne.  In 1950, he was called back in the service and assigned to an engineer battalion in Korea where he received two battle stars.

In 1958, Calvin was elected Reno County Sheriff.  He was active in forming and creating the Kansas Sheriff’s Association, and served as 2nd president of the association, where he is still a member.  Calvin later owned a driveway company, delivering recreational vehicles, buses, and trailers throughout the United States and Canada.   He traveled every state in the United States, and every providence in Canada, making many friends along the way. 

Calvin was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post 68 in Hutchinson, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and a 24-year volunteer for the National Junior College Association.

Calvin is survived by:  daughter, Beth Sheppard of Hutchinson, KS; son, Scott Sheppard (Rendi) of Liberty, MO; two granddaughters, Whitney Sheppard and Kelsie Harper (Jake); grandson, Max Meyer, all of Lee’s Summit, MO; two great-granddaughters, Isabella (13) and Scarlett Harper (7); and a brother, Tom Sheppard (Martha) of Rancho Santa Margarita, California.

He was preceded in death by:  his parents; a brother, and a sister.

Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 4, 2023, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Michael Tomson-DeGreeff officiating.  Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.  Private inurnment will take place in the church columbarium.  Cremation has taken place.  Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. The family will receive friends at the church following his service.
