A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon until 8 p.m. today for Reno, Harvey, Sedgwick, Butler, Kingman, Allen, Greenwood and Woodson counties as dangerously hot conditions move across south-central Kansas.
The National Weather Service is forecasting heat index values as high as 107 degrees, creating an increased risk of heat-related illnesses for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Forecasters urge residents to drink plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. Those who must be outside should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and take frequent breaks in the shade.
Officials also encourage residents to check on elderly relatives, neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to the extreme heat.

As temperatures climb, the Hutchinson Salvation Army is opening its facility as a cooling center. Residents needing relief from the heat are welcome to visit the Salvation Army at 700 North Walnut during normal business hours to cool down in an air-conditioned environment.
The National Weather Service also reminds the public never to leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle. Temperatures inside a parked car can reach deadly levels within minutes, even with the windows cracked.
The Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. today. Residents are encouraged to take precautions to stay cool and hydrated throughout the afternoon and evening.
