Commission to continue discussion on expansion

Posted Jun 19, 2021 11:03 AM

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners will once again discuss expanding the board from three to five members during Tuesday's agenda session.

The discussion has been ongoing for several meetings now and, although it has been brought up in the past by previous boards, this is the first time it has been given any serious consideration.

In order to make that happen, the commission would have to pass a resolution, taking the matter to a public vote. If they want that to be in the November election, they will need to have something ready to go to the county clerk's office by Aug. 3.

The board has also asked county counselor Joe O’Sullivan to inform them of the legal impacts on the open meetings act of having five members as opposed to three. Both commissioners Ron Sellers and Daniel Friesen have expressed frustration about the inability of the commission to discuss matters outside of agenda sessions in order to prepare to take action on various topics.

Tuesday's meeting of the Reno County Commission begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.
