YODER, Kan. — A public town hall meeting is scheduled for residents in and around the Yoder area on what can be done to deal with high nitrate levels in Rural Water District 101 north of Yoder. The meeting is Thursday, Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Journey of Yoder activity center, located two miles north of Yoder.
Nitrate levels have risen above allowable limits in Rural Water District 101, which serves the Yoder area. The last Nitrate level test was collected on June 6, 2022. The level tested at 11.3 mg/L, which exceeds the maximum contaminant levels for public water supply systems. Nitrate levels in water resources have increased in many areas due to applications of inorganic fertilizer and animal manure in agricultural areas.
The county has been dealing with the high nitrate level since they were first notified of the problem in August of 2020. Since then, efforts to remediate the contamination have gone unfulfilled. The county has been looking for an alternative water source and has been looking to dig test wells to find a suitable source.
At least two of the Reno County Commissioners are expected to attend, as well as leadership from Reno County Public Works.
