Fatal accident cause of lengthy K-96 closure Wednesday afternoon

HAVEN, Kan. — A Maize woman was killed and a Pretty Prairie man was injured in an accident on K-96 Wednesday afternoon in Haven.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, A 2019 Kenworth tractor trailer in the westbound lanes of the highway was partially blocking the driving lane while assisting a stranded motorist.

For an unknown reason, a 2023 Kia Sportage struck the passenger rear corner of the semi and then rotated counter clockwise and came to rest on the right shoulder of the West bound lane facing Southeast.

The driver of the Kia, 23-year-old Jaeden Michelle Douglas of Maize, was killed, a juvenile was also in the vehicle, but that record is protected. Also hurt was pedestrian, 21-year-old Aaron Joseph Brewer of Pretty Prairie. He was taken to Hutchinson Regional for treatment of minor injuries.
