NEWTON, Kan. — The City of Newton said that in the upcoming billing cycle, utility customers will notice the new 2024 utility rates in effect.
Rates had remained flat for more than seven years, and operational costs had increased dramatically. Last spring, the City Commission adopted a new rate structure that gradually increases rates over the next few years to keep the utilities solvent. The new rates also eliminate the 38% Sewer Plant Upgrade Fee and stop attempting to pay off the plant loan early.
The total utility bill (water/sewer/trash) for a low user of 300 cubic feet of water was $96.21 in 2023. In 2024, their bill will be $96.62. For a 600 cubic feet user, the total bill was $151.32 in 2023. In 2024, their bill will be $151.97.
