Nickerson sales tax extension will go on the ballot

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson City Council approved a resolution that will take the one-cent sales tax to a vote again this November.

The sales tax was first approved by a vote of the public in 2012. The tax then funded the new community center. Once that was finished, the sales tax came up for extension in 2017. City residents again approved the tax for sewer line and park improvements. Now, without November approval, the tax would sunset in 2022.

There were some changes to the resolution and in the way the funds would be spent. The council approved adding sidewalk improvements and an overall upkeep of the city to the sales tax question. The park and sewer line improvements also remain on the resolution.

With the recent increase in sales tax revenue the city takes in about $75,000 per year and currently has a balance of around $170,000 to fund various projects.
