HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The new five member Reno County Commission has a renovated space to hold its meetings. The first meeting in the renovated Veterans Room in the Courthouse was Tuesday.

"The Veterans Room is in the basement of the Courthouse," said Reno County Administrator Randy Partington. "It's just around the corner from the elevator and the entrance to the Sheriff's Office. The Veterans Room, I don't think its been used in the past for county commission meetings unless there was an emergency situation, where another room wasn't available. Toward the end of last year, the county commission had been talking about, when they were doing the courthouse renovations, possibly creating, like a modular room in the middle of the first floor of the courthouse, knowing that there's five commissioners, there wasn't going to be space in the old commission chambers."

They ultimately decided that redoing the Veterans Room was a better use of funds.

"Instead of spending $400,000 to $500,000 on that, on a modular room, the commission authorized staff to modify the Veterans Room, which is, again, in the basement of the courthouse, to fit in five commissioners and be set up in a professional manner."

The meetings will now be in the Veterans Room going forward. They had formerly been at the Reno County Annex.
