Another substantial building on this corner, not included in last week's article, was the Midland Hotel. This three-story hotel, which opened in May of 1888, was constructed in an "L" shape with the livery facilities on the back side. The first photo shows it when brand new, taken by Glines.
It contained many retail businesses on the first floor with street fronts. It survived the 1903 flood, but the 1929 flood devastated it. The second photo shows the Midland during the 1929 flood, which shows how high the water got.
After a fire gutted the interior, it was condemned and razed in 1931. The third photo shows the Midland's replacement between 1932 and 1936.
The Shamrock Lunch Diner (a Valentine Diner) was there during prohibition, still going on in Kansas, and had some interesting offerings.
In 1937, the Wolcott Building was constructed on this site, which we covered last week. The fourth photo again shows the property today, DCI park and gazebo. Owned by the Data Center Inc. at 20 West 2nd.
