Hutchinson CTE Academy FFA to Host Annual Plant Sale April 30

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy FFA chapter will hold its annual plant sale Thursday, April 30, offering a wide selection of flowers and planters while raising funds to support student programs.

The one-day sale will run from 1:30 to 7 p.m., or until all items are sold out, at the CTE Academy located at 800 E. 15th Circle. Organizers say customers are encouraged to arrive early, as last year’s sale sold out quickly.

“This is our fourth year that we’ve offered it, and it’s continued to grow,” said instructor Michelle Goossen. “The students help select those plants, market them, essentially do the work here… and all of our raised money goes to help support all things FFA — trips, contests, scholarships and stuff like that.”

Although the chapter does not yet have a greenhouse, students remain heavily involved in the process. Plants are sourced from an outside supplier, but students take an active role in planning, promotion and sales.

The fundraiser supports a growing FFA program at the CTE Academy, which places a strong emphasis on animal science. Goossen said the program was developed to meet student interest, noting many Hutchinson High students expressed a desire for careers involving animals.

Within the program, students can take courses in areas such as basic animal science, small animal care and veterinary assisting, where they can earn certifications through hands-on experience in clinics. Additional coursework includes equine science, food science and introductory agriculture classes.

Goossen said the goal is to give students broader exposure to agriculture and its role in everyday life.

“As much exposure really to the world of agriculture — realizing it’s beyond plows and sows, that it’s really in your everyday life,” she said.

In addition to classroom instruction, students participate in contests, community outreach and educational events aimed at increasing awareness of agriculture in the Hutchinson area.

The plant sale will feature hanging baskets, combination planters and a variety of smaller potted plants. Proceeds will go directly toward supporting student opportunities within the FFA chapter.

Customers can enter through the main doors of the CTE Academy, where signage will direct them to the sale area. Organizers also advise the public to follow social media updates for availability in case the sale ends early due to high demand.
