SEDGWICK COUNTY — A man who admitted leaving the scene of a high-speed crash that seriously injured two people will learn his fate Tuesday in the courtroom of Judge Christopher Magana's courtroom.
In February, Rakim Dean, who was 28 at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated battery and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
Just before 2a.m. May 7, 2023, police responded to the report of an injury collision involving an overturned Jeep near Kellogg and Interstate 235, according to officer Kristopher Gupilan. First responders found two occupants in the Jeep with severe but non-life threatening injuries. Both of the occupants were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Near the Jeep was an unoccupied Dodge Challenger. Witnesses reported seeing this vehicle driving on Kellogg at speeds estimated to be above 100-MPH.
It was determined that the Dodge rear-ended the Jeep causing the collision. One of the witnesses saw the driver of the Dodge, later identified as Dean, walk away from the crash.
A short time later officers responded to an unknown EMS call at a hotel on W. Kellogg. They contacted Dean and determined he was the driver of the Dodge.
He was uninjured. Detectives from the Wichita Police Traffic Unit collected the data from the Dodge’s Event Data Recorder and determined Dean was driving at 136 MPH prior to the crash.
