HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Saturday, November 25, 2023 is Small Business Saturday. According to the Small Business Administration, Small Business Saturday is a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities.
Mark Buckley with Toy Depot in Hutchinson noted that local small businesses invest in where they are.
"I know we gave to 39 different organizations last year," Buckley said. "We do it because we like to, you know, and it's part of being a community. I know a lot of people run to the big box stores, but, unfortunately, they take all the money either to Bentonville or Wall Street or somewhere else and they don't really keep it in Hutchinson."
Dan Murray with the National Federation of Independent Business Kansas chapter, is keenly aware of the struggles small businesses are facing this year.
"Small business owners in our communities operate on much thinner margins," Murray said. "Keeping them open in our communities is vital. They are the folks that employ our friends. They are the folks that support your local sports teams. They are the backbone of Main Street in most of our Kansas communities. Taking the opportunity to go to a small retailer in your town and supporting them, is seriously important."
These are the same folks that you see at the grocery store, at church and elsewhere. They want you to buy from them today, and when you have another need, buy from them tomorrow.
"I want the opportunity to sell you anything and everything you ever want to buy," said Kevin Rule with the Sleep Shoppe and Furniture Gallery. "There's only one way that I know of to do that and that's to take great care of you each and every time you want to buy something."
Founded by American Express in 2010 and officially cosponsored by the Small Business Administration since 2011, Small Business Saturday has become an important part of small businesses’ busiest shopping season.
