Schools in Newton on lockdown during search for wanted felon

HARVEY COUNTY —A wanted felon is in custody after a search Friday afternoon in northern Newton.

Just after 1:30 p.m., Police arrested  25-year-old Tariq Gragg near 13th and Plum after he fled on foot from a pursuit in a stolen vehicle.

The driver of the car, Selena Martinez, was also arrested. Gragg was wanted on warrants out of Kansas City.

Gragg was believed to be armed but did not have a weapon when he was arrested. Police are continuing to search the area for a weapon or other evidence.

Harvey County Sheriff's Office, North Newton Police, and Kansas Highway Patrol assisted with the investigation. During the search, Newton High School, Northridge Elementary, Santa Fe, and Cooper Early Ed Center were locked as a safety precaution.
