HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Christmastime Santa Sacks given out by Salthawk Community Support need to be filled again this year.

"The Santa bags will be a value of over $100," said Claire Foy with Salthawk Community Support. "The only way we can do this is with the support of the community. We will be giving those out a week or so before Christmas. Right now, I'm here to ask the community to step up like they have so often in the past. Churches, organizations, youth groups, our monies just come from a wide variety."

Salthawk Community Support steps in throughout the year to help kids who are at risk of not showing up to school, or not having the tools to succeed when they are there.

"When their stomach is empty, it's hard to concentrate on schoolwork," Foy said. "Without a warm coat or gloves or shoes, especially like, maybe going to school this morning, how are they going to get there? It's just too hard, sometimes it's easier to stay home. Sometimes, when the adults are so worried about paying the bills, it's hard to be supportive to a struggling teenager."

Salthawk Community Support has staff at Hutchinson High School and at Hutchinson Middle School-8. With two schools of kids to give to, the need is as great as ever.

"We are hoping to serve over 200 kids," Foy said. "The approximate cost of each bag is $100. Right there, doing the math, we're needing to raise over $20,000. It's a lot to ask, but, in the past, we've just had tremendous support."
