HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutchinson Salthawk boys basketball team met up with Garden City for the second year in a row in the first round of 6A sub-state. The results were the same with a 68-39 win over the Buffaloes Wednesday night at the SAC.
Stop, drop and roll was the theme for the night as Hutch shot 81% from the field on 30 out of 37 shooting including four three-point baskets in the first quarter. Junior guard Garrett Robinson hit three of those treys and scored 11 of his game high 16 points in the first stanza.
Second year head coach Bryan Miller said, "It was a total team effort with everybody contributing."
Everyone did contribute, including several reserves who played late but contributed to the win. Sophomore Tai Clark scored 6 points along with Christopher Lachenmair's fourth quarter 4 points.
Two Salthawk regulars did not start, Nic Lange had the flu this week and Kinser Newquist was working through a foot injury, so both saw limited action. Bradyn Rodriquez played well as he started for Lange.
Senior Khalil Mendoza electrified the student section with a steal at half-court and his 2nd dunk of the season to start the 3rd quarter scoring. Then the floodgates opened with the Salthawks outscoring the Buffaloes 22 to 8 in the 3rd stanza.
Hutchinson (12-8) now will travel to Lawrence to take on the Free State (20-1) Firebirds on Saturday night at 6 p.m. with a trip to Wichita for class 6A state on the line. Garden City finishes their season at 10-11.
