
Thomas Harley Long, 85, died August 24, 2023. He was born February 18, 1938, in Sterling, to Harley and Ola (Price) Long.
Tom attended Sylvia Rural High School, graduating in 1956. He then attended Hutchinson Community College. Tom served in the United States Army from 1960-1962. He was a master carpenter, remodeling and building homes in Reno County. Tom was a Construction Supervisor at Hutchinson Correctional Facility, retiring in 2006. He built almost anything you could imagine, but especially enjoyed building remote control airplanes. Tom also enjoyed automotive repair, gardening, fishing, and reading DIY books. But most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending every event they had.
On February 14, 1997, Tom married Cleta Dewey in Hutchinson. She survives.
Also surviving are: his son, Mark Long; grandson, Josh Long; stepchildren, Melanie Chappel, Monica Bornholdt (Jarrod), James Bussell (Tricia), Julie and Amy Owen; ex son-in-law, Jon Chappel; step-grandchildren, Jonathan Chappel, Jerome and Jake Love, Macy Spencer (Corey Mahoney), Maleigha Bornholdt, Vanessa and Tristen Mendoza; 8 step-great-grandchildren; niece and nephews, Diana Tucker (Dennis), Monte Long (Carla), Fred Long (Elaine), Randy Long (Marla), Jerald Long (Susan).
He was preceded in death by: his parents; siblings, Don, Fred, Phyllis, and Ray Long; and granddaughter, Demi Long.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson. Friends may sign his memorial book from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the family present from 5-7 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary.
