According to court records, police were dispatched to the 8400 block of Highland Avenue in Kansas City on a report of shots fired. They encountered a victim on the floor inside the front door of the residence.

He was unresponsive and was later pronounced deceased. Officers obtained information that the defendant, Derek C. Jones, was the shooting suspect.

Witnesses told police that the victim was with several children in the residence when there was a knock at the door and the victim went to the door.

Jones stepped one foot inside, the witness told police, and discharged a firearm several times at the victim.

He backed up and re-approached the door, discharging more rounds at the victim. He did the same a third time. Jones told police he knocked on the door and fired shots at the victim when it was opened. He also retrieved the victim's pistol and took it with him when he left the residence.
