Hutchinson Public Library to Host ‘Ida Day’ Tea Honoring Historic Librarian

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Public Library is inviting the community to step back in time and celebrate the legacy of one of its most notable figures during a special event later this month.

The library will host “Afternoon Tea with Ida” at 3 p.m. on April 20, marking what would be the 138th birthday of longtime librarian Ida Day Holzapfel. Known for her dedication, professionalism and high standards, Holzapfel left a lasting imprint on the library and its role in the Hutchinson community.

Organizers say Holzapfel was also known for hosting daily tea with staff at 3 p.m., a tradition the event aims to recreate. Guests are encouraged to bring their own teacups and enjoy an afternoon of tea, coffee and light refreshments, including cookies, cakes and finger sandwiches.

The event will reflect a distinctly American take on mid-20th century tea traditions, which blended formal customs with a more relaxed, social atmosphere. Library staff say the gathering will mirror those traditions, offering a casual environment for conversation and connection.

In addition to celebrating Holzapfel’s contributions, the event highlights the continued growth of the Hutchinson Public Library. Officials say the library has expanded its programs and services significantly over the past century while maintaining affordability for the community.

Registration is required due to limited space. More information and sign-up details are available through the library’s website.
