HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jade Piros de Carvalho announced her resignation from the Hutchinson City Council at the meeting on Tuesday.
"I will no longer have a residence in Hutchinson after the end of the month," Piros de Carvalho said. "I will need to resign my council seat as of January 31. For the past seven months, I have spent three days a week away from my five-year-old daughter and my husband of 12 years, so that I could work in Topeka. Our family has made a decision to relocate closer to my job so that we can be together."
This means that there are now two vacancies on the Hutchinson City Council, as Sara Bagwell stepped down from her seat at the last December meeting. Applications for both positions, which are up for election in November 2023, are being taken for a little over a week.
"I would suggest that you stay with the January 11 due date," said Interim City Manager Gary Meagher. "We make sure that people understand they are two separate applications. Because one is at large, I guess they could apply for both. They are both one year. One is at large. One is specific. I think they need to let us know what they are applying for."
Director of Public Information and Community Engagement Rebekah Starkey Keasling said that she would adjust the application so that people can indicate which district they live in, so that the council knows.
"We will just have to trust that they know where those districts are," Starkey Keasling said. "I will publish the map with it, so that they can double check. We'll want to double check all of those, when we get all of the addresses in, before you make actual appointments, but those are simple changes to make."
An application for the city council positions will be up on hutchgov.com as soon as the changes to clarify addresses and to take off the question regarding renting or owning property are made. The application will still ask if you are current on property taxes.
