HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Some major changes could be coming to the Reno County Courthouse as part of an overall capital improvement program.

As part of the capital requests through 2026, the county commission approved having a space study done on the courthouse. The idea is to find more workable space for the county commission, county administrator, IT, the district attorney and district court.

The study allowed for courthouse drawings and cost estimates for such projects. One of the major changes would be on the first floor where the rotunda has gone largely unused since most of the offices were moved to the annex. Tentative plans would be to use the commission chambers as a conference room and refurbish the office areas. It would then use the open space on the first floor for construction of a new commission meeting room with seating for up to 44 persons.

Plans also include renovated courtrooms on the third floor and better space for the district attorney’s office on the fifth floor. It would also make safety improvements to the fifth floor as well as the mezzanine walkway on the second floor.

The total cost of the projects is estimated at nearly $1.2 million. The courthouse projects and the rest of the five-year capital plan will be a part of Tuesday's county commission meeting starting at 9 a.m. at the county annex.
