BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 Education Foundation will present nearly $60,000 in donations to five Buhler families that were affected by the fires in March.

The day after the fires, the school district began reaching out to Buhler families that were impacted and immediately went to work, figuring out just how to help. The Buhler Foundation was able to help provide essentials for families as they began to assess the true damage that they were facing due to the fires, including providing clothing, bedding, food and shelter.  Other entities also chipped in to help. The Foundation received hundreds of gifts from residents near and far as well as large gifts from Haven School District and Holy Cross School.

“Our local community, businesses, and neighboring communities and schools rallied quickly to raise money, donate items and meet the needs of our families. USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman said. “It is what makes our community and relationships with other communities so special - we care for each other."

Over the course of a month and a half, the Buhler USD 313 Education Foundation had $58,000 in donations come in, including a $20,000 donation from Williams Energy.

“It is reassuring to know that Williams supports its employees and the communities where we live in critical times like the recent wildfire,”  Justin Mills, operations supervisor, Williams said. “I’m thankful that we can provide relief through this donation to our neighbors and employees who have been impacted in our hometown.”

All of the funds received at the Foundation for the fire victims will be distributed out to the five families that experienced a total loss.

“The loss our Buhler families sustained from the fires was extensive in both property and personal belongings,” Couchman said. “Each family that is receiving funds had their homes destroyed by the fire. These funds will lay the foundation for them as they begin to secure more permanent living arrangements.”
