HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Friday, BrightHouse posted on social media concerns that they have regarding the upcoming national emergency test that will happen on all electronic devices at 1:20 p.m. Central on Wednesday, October 4.

"Those of you who have a 'back-up' cellphone for the purposes of trying to escape abuse, or have a cellphone that you don't want your abusive partner to hear once the audible warning goes through, be ready to have it relocated in a place where they cannot hear it before the warning occurs, or simply turn it off until it is safe to turn it back on," the post said.  "Bear in mind, once you turn the phone back on, the audible warning will still go through regardless of how much time has passed."

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the purpose of the Oct. 4 test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level. In case the Oct. 4 test is postponed due to widespread severe weather or other significant events, the back-up testing date is Oct. 11.

Beginning at approximately 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, cell towers will broadcast the test for approximately 30 minutes. During this time, WEA-compatible wireless phones that are switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and whose wireless provider participates in WEA, should be capable of receiving the test message.

This will be the third nationwide test, but the second test to all cellular devices. The test message will display in either English or in Spanish, depending on the language settings of the wireless handset.
