HUTCHINSON, Kan. —  Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran spoke at the appropriations hearing that he asked for on Tuesday regarding the supplemental money for Ukraine and Israel. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin were there to testify. Moran was disappointed that another member of the Cabinet was not there, as he would like to have heard from Secretary Mayorkas in the same hearing, but Moran did say that he will be coming to the committee next week. He'd also like to see southern border money included.

"There are many of us who believe our borders are a national security issue as well, that emergency supplemental financial aid should be included" Moran said. "I also want you to know that we need the administration to work with us on policy changes of the laws and policies at the border, financial support for changes at the border, for additional personnel, are insufficient. We need a different approach toward the push and pull of those people around the world who are seeking entry into the United States. I'm interested in seeing a package pass the Congress and be signed into law, but I want to make certain the administration knows that there are many members of Congress who are serious about the issues of national security at our own borders."

Moran also asked Secretary Austin to explain the message that failure to support Ukraine would provide to the world.

"I think it sends a horrible message to our adversaries, Senator," Austin said. "I think our adversaries would like to build a narrative that we are not a trustworthy ally or a partner. We see some of that beginning to play out in the media space right now. They are seeking to take advantage of every opportunity. They would like to prove that the United States is something else other than it is. We are the world's most reliable ally or partner. I think it's necessary to demonstrate that we're going to stick by our partners."

Moran also said that he wants to see some changes to the legislation as it sits currently to make it more palatable to the House, as well, so that it can pass.
