City of Hutch releases FAQ on weather sirens

Posted May 19, 2021 4:16 PM

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With severe weather season upon us, the city of Hutchinson wanted to remind residents of the warning siren protocols.

When there is a tornado warning for Hutchinson or South Hutchinson the sirens will go off. The sirens will run for three minutes then will go silent for three minutes. This is to cool the sirens so they don’t malfunction.

There is no all clear signal from the sirens so residents need to monitor radio or news posts or have a good weather radio available. Several weather phone apps are also a good way to monitor the weather.

The sirens are an alert to people outdoors. Residents should not rely on the sirens to alert them to severe weather. Please monitor the weather on one of the many sites available.

The city and county also have Everbridge which is a weather warning system for your personal device. The FAQ on the sirens can be found at hutchgov.com.
