Farm and biofuel organizations are praising action by the U.S. House approving legislation that would allow year-round nationwide sales of E15 gasoline, a move supporters say could provide a boost to farmers, ethanol producers and consumers.
The House voted 218-203 Wednesday to pass the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act, legislation that would permanently permit summer sales of gasoline blended with 15% ethanol. Current federal regulations restrict E15 sales in many states during summer months because of air-quality rules.
Supporters of the bill say expanding access to E15 would increase corn demand, strengthen rural economies and provide drivers with a lower-cost fuel option.

The American Farm Bureau Federation called the measure a “win-win” for both farmers and consumers. Federation President Zippy Duvall said expanded E15 availability would create additional corn demand while helping motorists save money at the pump because E15 is often priced below standard gasoline.
Other agriculture and ethanol groups also applauded the vote, including the National Farmers Union and the American Coalition for Ethanol. Industry leaders said permanent year-round sales would provide more certainty for ethanol producers and rural communities that depend on the biofuels industry.
Backers of the legislation argue the measure could provide economic relief for farmers facing lower commodity prices and increasing production costs while also expanding consumer fuel choices nationwide.
The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
