Algae alerts still in place at 3 area lakes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Several area lakes remain under watches or warnings for blue-green algae. With the hot weather, the number of lakes infested with the green surface slime is increasing.

Marion County Lake and Harvey County East Lake near Newton are both under algae watches. Marion Reservoir is still under an algae warning.

All livestock and pets should be kept away from the water. The Marion County lakes have been under the advisories for a month. Harvey County East Lake was closed to boating and fishing last week.

Exposure to blue-green algae during swimming, wading and water-skiing can lead to rashes, skin, eye irritation and effects such as nausea, stomach aches, and tingling in fingers and toes.

Visitors may fish at the lakes, but only the fillet portion should be consumed. The KDHE issues the algae advisories every Thursday during the summer months. No other lakes in the area are under any advisory at this time.
