HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA said they got a nice start to their fundraising for the new Y already.

"So far, we have secured a $6 million lead gift to the new facility," Foster said. "We'll probably kind of get going with that sometime to the public in early 2024."

This initial gift gets them a good start toward their fundraising goal.

"Our goal is $20 million," Foster said. "We know it's probably going to cost more than that. What we'll do is, once that money's raised and we have a new facility, whatever it ends up costing, with the cost of how things are going up now, seven years ago when we built the Newton Y, that was about a $20 million project. We assume that will probably be at least a $30 million project now."

The operating budget of the Hutchinson Y will have to absorb whatever over $20 million is the cost, so growth in membership will continue to be a key.

"If we were to take out a loan, we would just pay that back via operating dollars," Foster said.

As of the latest check of the numbers, there are over 2000 membership units, which could be individuals or families, at the Hutchinson YMCA.
