SHAWNEE COUNTY — A man who fled to Mexico in 2017 after being accused of rape of a woman in Topeka has been sentenced for the crime. Daniel Arreola, 22, Topeka, will spend 20 years in prison, according to the Shawnee County District Attorney's office.
A jury in August found Arreola guilty of seven felony counts.
Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay said Arreola forced his way into a woman's apartment in July 2015 and raped her at gunpoint.
The case was set for jury trial to begin in February of 2017. However, four days prior to the trial Arreola cut off his court-ordered GPS ankle bracelet and fled to Mexico. Arreola was apprehended in Mexico and returned to Kansas in August of 2019 and has remained in custody since.
