James R. “Jim” Schinstock  |1942-2022|

James Raymond “Jim” Schinstock, 80, died peacefully at his home on September 28, 2022, surrounded by his family.  He was born February 7, 1942, in Dodge City, to Albert and Ola Mae (Gerkin) Schinstock.

Jim graduated from Kinsley High School in 1960, St. Mary of the Plains College, Dodge City, KS, in 1965, and Fort Hays State University in 1969, with his Master’s Degree. He taught Philosophy, Human Relations, American History and English for 44 years at Hutchinson Community College.  For 12 years after he retired, Jim was a Community Columnist for The Hutchinson News, writing a variety of articles that readers looked forward to on a regular basis; his last article was published September 11, 2022.  In addition, Jim enjoyed traveling, reading, and playing cards.  He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson, where he sang in the Chancel Choir for over 50 years, was a Eucharistic Minister, and was involved in the Cursillo Community.

Jim reveled in the achievements of his children and grandchildren, and he loved observing the successes of his thousands of students.  He was known for his smile and his quick wit, but was perhaps most well-known for his love of the people close to him.

On September 2, 1967, he married Carolyn Sue Wargo, in Fort Riley. 

Jim is survived by:  his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Schinstock of Hutchinson; son Bradley Schinstock and wife Joanne - their children Victoria, Gemma, Gabriel, and Maximilian of Hyattsville, MD; daughter Kristin Plants and her son Austin of Hutchinson, KS; Ryan Schinstock and his wife Bridget - their children Abigail, Emma, Riley, and Makenzi of Grain Valley, MO; and daughter Julia Schinstock of Topeka, KS; brother, Gene Schinstock and wife Jeanne of Lincoln, NE; sister Marilyn McClendon of Larned, KS; and sister Marjorie Dowell and husband Rich of Cody, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jerome Schinstock and Gerald Schinstock.

Parish Rosary will be 10:00 a.m.  Saturday, October 1, 2022, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m., both at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson, with Father Aaron Spexarth officiating.  Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.  Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Catholic Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson.
