HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Just after 1 p.m. Tuesday, the Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD) responded to the 1800 block of south Buhler Road for a brush fire. The first crews to arrive were met with heavy smoke conditions that were drifting across Buhler Road.

HFD requested the Reno County Sheriff's Office to shut down Buhler Road in both directions. Approximately 25 acres of prairie grass were burning along with seven brush piles and one pile of tires. Because of muddy conditions from recent rains, crews resorted to using UTVs and hand work. The fire damaged one Evergy electrical pole and was contained to 25 acres of the 158-acre lot.

Crews remained on-scene for multiple hours extinguishing hotspots. No injuries were noted. The fire was caused by an out-of-control prescribed burn.

HFD would like to thank the following departments for their help: Buhler Fire Department, RNSO, Reno County Emergency Communications, Hutchinson Public Works and Evergy.
