Community Quilt to come together

Posted Mar 02, 2023 3:41 PM

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Public Library gave an update on the Community Quilt Project Thursday.

Thirty-one blocks were submitted, so the Makerspace Staff will create another block with the Hutchinson 150th-Anniversary logo to give them a quiltable 32 blocks.

The Design The Quilt Party is coming up March 9 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Clayworks at Disability Supports at 12th and Main in Hutchinson.

Three scale models (24x24”) of the overall quilt will be available to create a design layout. Participants will be split into three teams. Each team will have photographs of each quilt block to place wherever they think is best on the scale model.

Once the teams have settled on their designs, each team will briefly present their perspective on their design. Then, participants will vote on their favorite design. Library staff in attendance will be the tie-breakers, in the event of a three-way tie.

All the finished quilt blocks will be on display, so those who attend can see the colors and feel the textures of the squares to help with the design and layout of the final quilt. No food or coffee is allowed around the quilt blocks, please.

There will be free Scuttlebutts coffee paid for by the Community Foundation's Nonprofit Coffee Fund and you can put your morning snack on March 9 on the library's tab at the register.

The current plan is to make a quilt that is approximately 7’4” x 7’4”. That allows for a large central square with 1½ to 2-inch inner borders and a 3 to 4-inch outer border. We may also add a pocket across the top of the quilt to accommodate a hanging rod.

The quilting will happen Mondays and Thursdays from March 13 to 30.

If you have any questions regarding the Reno County Community Quilt Project contact Daryl Goad ([email protected]) or Nathan Towle ([email protected]) or call the Hutchinson Public Library Makerspace, 620-663-5441  extension 133.

The quilt, when finished, will be housed in the Reno County Museum.
