BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 Board of Education approved the motion to set the capacity for new non-resident students for the 2024-25 school year based on the projected enrollment numbers that were presented at Monday night's board meeting.
The board amended the motion to increase the capacity for non-resident enrollment to eight in the fifth grade based on availability at Buhler Grade School. In addition, Superintendent Cindy Couchman will have the ability to alter the numbers to maximize the available space across the district.
"So what we did is we looked at our previous enrollment patterns, and we took our last year's enrollment and projected it forward to next year and then we sent out a survey to all current students both resident and non-resident," Couchman said. "Any current student on their intent to return and we are collecting that data and from that data and our enrollment projections that we viewed, (historical projections of retaining students from each grade level) that's how we are going to set capacity for our new non-resident students.
In March, Couchman said that legally speaking, every school district has to take any kids in good standing that actually live in the district. Therefore, capacity at each grade level in each school of the USD 313 district is how many non-resident seats are available for the following school year.
The numbers will be finalized and posted on the district website by May 1.
