HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Three days after a Reno County court denied a motion to withdraw his plea, a Hutchinson man will face sentencing Thursday.
Brenden Jones filed a motion to withdraw guilty pleas to eight counts of attempted first degree murder and one count of aggravated battery.
Jones said in court he never understood what was happening during his plea hearing in March of 2019 and he also claims that his defense attorney Steve Osborne told him if he went to Larned State Hospital he would avoid prison time.
Jones was found guilty of shooting Jacob Foley in Aug. of 2019, then hiding in a house in the 300 block of W. 16th Ave. where a five-hour- long standoff began. After five hours, Jones and officers exchanged gunfire, with Jones being struck in the leg.
Jones could be facing between 54 and 159 years in prison, although as part of the plea deal the defense will be able to ask for 25 years during the hearing.
