Reno County Commission to discuss liquor by the drink Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners are not wasting any time bringing the issue of liquor by the drink to the table. The matter is on the agenda for Tuesday's regular meeting.

It comes less than a week after the county commission and staff learned of a business that had an issue with its liquor license as it, at that time, did not sell enough food to maintain a liquor license.

Kansas State Statute 41-2646 allows the board of commissioners to submit a question to the voters, following either the adoption of a resolution or upon receiving a valid petition from citizens. The election would be to either prohibit liquor by the drink, permit liquor to be sold in locations that received at least 30% of its sales from food — as is the case in Reno County — or to permit liquor sales with no food requirement.

For the current statute to change in Reno County, the county commission would have to bring the proposal up for a public vote. Tuesday's Reno County Commission meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.
