Man who came to Kan. to meet underage girl is going to prison

WABAUNSEE COUNTY—A man who traveled from North Carolina to meet an underage girl in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, was sentenced Tuesday in district court, according to the Wabaunsee County Sheriff.

Derrick Yarnell Mayfield, 21, was sentenced to 41 months in prison, must register as a sex offender for life and have lifetime post release supervision.

In October of 2022, the Wabaunsee County Sheriff's office was alerted to possible exploitation of a child.

Deputies responded to investigate at a residence in the 400 Block of East Flint Hills Drive, Lake Wabaunsee.  Investigators made contact with Derrick Yarnell Mayfield of Henderson North Carolina.

Mayfield flew from North Carolina to meet the young Wabaunsee County girl. Mayfield had originally made contact with her online. Evidence discovered at the home led to Mayfield's arrest.

Mayfield was originally held on requested charges of aggravated indecent liberties w/ child, intercourse with child, Unlawful possession of visual depiction of child and Contribute to a child's misconduct, according to online jail records. Deputies took the child into protective custody.
