Douglas Wilson Scales, 77, of McPherson, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2023 at McPherson Health and Rehab.
Douglas was born in Sandy Level, Virginia on January 2, 1946, the son of Dorothy Lee Scales.
Doug attended Hillside Elementary School, Mount Laurel, New Jersey and Medford High School, Medford, New Jersey. He then attended Salina Technical School, Salina, Kansas.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Douglas was united in marriage to Caryl Rosalind (Winter) Wedel on January 31, 1980 at the First United Methodist Church in McPherson, Kansas.
Through the years, Doug worked for several mobile home manufacturers in Junction City, Kansas, worked for Kit Manufacturing, Kansas Jack as Senior Layout Draftsman, Wilson Construction and Engineers in Salina as a draftsman, Cargill Nutrina Feeds, Conway Elevator for W.R. Milling Company, and retired in 2010 from the National Cooperative Refinery Association as a number 1 operator.
Doug was a member of the Kansas Muzzle Loading Association. He enjoyed rock and roll music, sewing, quilting, cooking and digitizing. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and building guns.
He is survived by his wife, Caryl; son, Erik Scales of Scottsdale, Arizona; step-son, Joseph Wedel of McPherson, Kansas; grandchildren, Krysta Wedel and Shawn Wedel; sister, Patricia Vaughn of Dublin, Virginia; and brothers, John Pete Turner of Roanoke, Virginia and Issiah Hockett of New Jersey.
Doug was preceded in death by his mother; two infant siblings; step son - Patrick Wedel and step-daughter Debbie Wedel.
Visitation will be 5-7 pm, Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at Glidden-Ediger-Wiggins Chapel, McPherson, Kansas.
Graveside Service will be 9:00 am, Thursday, July 27, 2023 at McPherson Cemetery, with Pastor Lynn Scott officiating. Military honors will be presented by McPherson Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715.
