Certified Medication Aide / Certified Nurse Aide (CMA/CNA)

The Wesley | Hutchinson, Kansas

Salary Range: $16.00 to $25.00 hourly Status: Full-time or Part-time Shifts: Days or Nights

Description

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) works under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse and serves as a role model for CNAs. This position provides personal care and services to residents in a manner that promotes flexibility, safety, comfort, and dignity, with each resident’s overall well-being as the focal point of every task. All duties are performed in accordance with recognized standards, Kansas law, and the mission of The Wesley.

Summary of Responsibilities for Medication Administration

  1. Prepare and administer oral and topical medications as ordered by the physician and directed by the resident plan of care.
  2. Document medication administration on the Medication Record according to policies and procedures, including outcomes of PRN medications.
  3. Notify licensed nurses of stop orders, stock supply needs, medications requiring destruction, and medication errors.
  4. Assist licensed nurses with the removal of discontinued medications from medication carts.
  5. Count controlled medications with a licensed nurse.

Summary of Responsibilities for Resident Care

  1. Treat all residents with dignity and respect, including those with disruptive behaviors, and ensure resident rights are maintained at all times.
  2. Assist with implementing residents’ plans of care and interpreting care plans to CNAs, while promoting resident independence and choice.
  3. Serve as an example of quality nursing care for CNAs on the team.
  4. On some shifts, assume primary responsibility for administering the majority of medications to assigned residents.
  5. Support and foster positive relationships with residents, families, and visitors.
  6. Answer call lights promptly.
  7. Complete documentation of all tasks performed in accordance with The Wesley policies and procedures, including vital signs, meal percentages, weights, and other required documentation.
  8. Assist residents with transfers, ambulation, exercise, and transportation using gait belts, proper transfer techniques, and lifts as outlined in facility policies.
  9. Make beds and change bedding as needed to ensure resident comfort and hygiene.
  10. Assist with meal setup and feeding as needed and distribute and assist residents with snacks.
  11. Report behavioral or physical changes in residents’ conditions, concerns, or grievances to the charge nurse or appropriate administrative personnel.
  12. Provide personal care in a private, calm, and friendly manner.
  13. Routinely check residents to ensure needs are met in a timely manner.
  14. Maintain confidentiality of resident information at all times.
  15. Perform treatments and document observations and progress in nursing notes.
  16. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in residents’ plans of care.

Qualifications

  1. Current CMA certification in accordance with Kansas state law.
  2. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  3. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  4. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  5. Maintain current CMA certification by completing 10 hours of required continuing education every two years.
  6. Previous experience in geriatric care preferred.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively with team members and residents.
  8. Positive attitude toward the ill and elderly.
  9. Ability to cope with the mental and emotional demands of the position.
