HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education signed a non-binding letter at their meeting Monday night to allow conversations to continue about expansion of the Hutchinson YMCA.

"To the east of them is Hutch High," said USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson. "To the west of them is the ESC/TSC, also known as the naval building. To expand on their site, they would have to have some of our property. Then, there has been a little bit of conversation about, we really want to start, maybe, raising money. Could we get to a point where maybe we have just a letter of agreement and the goal of what's in this agreement, so that we could tell folks who might want to help us raise money to expand the Y, we can at least say, this is something that we're working on?"

The board agreed to sign the letter. It includes items like that the Y would have to pay to have the departments that are in the naval building moved elsewhere and that the Salthawk swim team, which now rents from the Y, might be able to use a new facility, if built in that footprint, without having to pay to rent it. The board vote was unanimous.

Fundraising for the new Y will not start until after the United Way's fundraising blackout period ends later this year.
