HAVEN, Kan. — The issue of Critical Race Theory was the topic of much discussion during Monday’s Haven School Board meeting.
The controversial curriculum was part of a motion made by one board member Monday night to establish a resolution or memorandum of understanding that CRT would not be taught in the school district.
The motion died for lack of a second. Superintendent Clark Wedel says until a solid understanding of what CRT is, how it is taught and how to get a solid description of the curriculum, any resolution or other action was not warranted. Wedel says he wants the board to come together on what the definition is for CRT before taking any kind of action.
Also in attendance during Monday’s meeting was State Senator Mark Steffen who stated that CRT would likely come up in the next legislative session. That means that action taken in Topeka will trickle down to school districts, according to Wedel, who says the district will have to face the issue of CRT one way or the other in the future.
Also last night, the board gave approval to a base raise of $0.50 for all classified staff and establish a wage scale for those employees. And the board did go into executive session to discuss the latest contract negotiations with its teachers..
