Wheat crop is dealing with cool, damp weather

Posted May 18, 2021 9:12 PM

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The cool weather continues to put some pressure on the wheat crop as the harvest is now less than two months away.

Still, the numbers released from the Kansas Ag Statistics are positive. According to the latest release, only 15% of the wheat is in poor to very poor shape, 31% fair and 54% good to excellent.

There is still concern that the very cold weather may have hurt the crop. More should be known as the annual field tours are underway.

Here in south-central Kansas, 98% of the wheat is jointed and 85% of the crop has headed. The maturity of the crop statewide is running a little behind schedule.
