HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tony Finlay with Hutch Rec told the City Council Tuesday the schedule for Salt City Splash this summer.

"Last year at this time, I came pleading for lifeguard applications," Finlay said. "We are ahead of where we were last year as far as recruitment goes, but we will definitely not have enough to maintain a full year."

They have 24 lifeguards trained and hired and two going through the training process, but they have no more applicants to choose from.

"We can open the Splash for the season," Finlay said. "We'll open the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, May 27, but with the exception of Memorial Day, we will be closed Mondays for the season."

There will still be some things going on at the Splash on Mondays.

"We'll be closed to the public, but we still will be open for like the YMCA swim team in the morning," Finlay said. "We'll have some adult or youth aquatic fitness classes, we'll have some other things on Monday that don't require the same amount of guards, but we will be closed to the public Mondays for the season. Part of what we hope will be accommodating is, we will stay open later on Fridays. We'll stay open to 8 p.m. on Fridays, instead of closing at our normal 6:30 p.m. Hopefully, families can enjoy that evening swim on Fridays and that will be throughout the season."

Mondays have traditionally been the slowest days for the Splash in previous years.
