HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At 4:35 a.m. Monday, crews were dispatched to 418 S. Howard for a reported structure fire.

When they got there, units found fire coming from a bedroom window on a single-story home. Crews made an aggressive interior attack and extinguished the fire. The structure sustained heavy smoke damage throughout and crews performed overhaul operations of the involved bedroom to look for fire extension into the attic space.

The fire is still being investigated by the Fire Marshal.

Luckily, the 4 occupants self-alerted to the fire in the bedroom and were able to escape as the home did not have any smoke detectors to alert them to the working fire.

The Hutchinson Fire Department would like to remind its citizens to please check your residence for smoke detectors, whether you own your home or rent. If you have smoke detectors, please make sure they are working properly. If you have any questions about smoke detectors, installation or availability please visit https://firemarshal.ks.gov/198/Get-Alarmed-Kansas-Free-Smoke-Alarm-Prog to find out more on free smoke detectors in our area.

Hutch Fire would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance in this incident:
