
North Dakota farmers and landowners are being forced to choose between well below-market offers for their property or go bankrupt from legal costs.
One farmer was offered half the market value for gas company pipeline across his land. When he denied, they threatened him with eminent domain, which means they would just take it without any compensation.

He fought back in court, but now has to pay his lawyer, as well as the gas company lawyers, and the state's lawyers. The fees are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and there are more like his.
All of this is now headed to the Supreme Court.
