HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It could be another volatile day for Reno County and the surrounding area. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning starting at noon and running until 9 p.m. on Tuesday as the Grassland Fire Danger Index is expected to reach catastrophic levels.
Wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour, with dry conditions, warm temperatures, and low humidity, will cause any fire that develops to spread rapidly. Open burning and agricultural burns are prohibited. Most of the recent fires were started by rekindled brush piles that were unattended. It is extremely important that anyone who has conducted a controlled burn over the last several days ensure that it is completely extinguished.
Strong winds can reignite brush piles for several weeks after initial burning. Stirring the pile ensures that hot ashes circulate and burn the fuel faster. Please be cautious of anything that could cause a spark. Properly dispose of cigarettes. If you see any smoke on Tuesday, please call 911 immediately and provide a location if possible.
