Hutchinson man arrested after police investigate gunfire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police Department (HPD) revealed on May 12, a Hutchinson man was arrested for charges related to criminal discharge of a firearm on May 11. 

At 4:42 p.m. HPD officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of west 12th in reference to a white male shooting a firearm three to five times.

Once officers arrived on scene, they heard an additional gunshot and established a perimeter. A short time later a white male emerged from a residence in the direction of the gunshots.

The male was detained without incident and was identified as Ryan Rutherford, 50, Hutchinson who resides in that block.

The investigation revealed that the shots were intentionally fired into the ground and backdrop. Due to initial uncertainty, the HPD Emergency Response team was utilized to clear the residence and evidence was later recovered.

Additional evidence on scene suggested that natural gas and water were being distributed to the residence unlawfully.

Rutherford was subsequently arrested for Criminal Discharge of a Firearm with the city limits and Theft of services. He was transported to the Reno County Detention Facility to be held on a $1,500 bond.

Rutherford is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
