Latest lake conditions as weekend arrives

MARION, Kan. — The algae situation at Marion Reservoir has not changed from the past week as the popular lake is still under an algae watch from the toxic growth.

The watch does allow for some limited activity in the lake. All other area lakes are free from such advisories.

A harmful algal bloom may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and will be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly. If the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact.

Low water levels are still a problem at most area lakes. Cheney Reservoir is now 2.5 feet below normal pool. Harvey County East Lake is still closed to most boating because of shallow conditions.
